Lyon: The 2018 Festival of Lights, or Fêtes des Lumières 2018, will take place from December 6 to 9!
The Fête des Lumières de Lyon will take place from 6 to 9 December 2018, an exceptional show in a magnificent city full of history.
September 8, 1852 was supposed to be the date of the inauguration of the statue of the Golden Virgin in Fourvière but following bad weather conditions in the Saône, that flooded the workshop of the sculptor Joseph-Hugues Fabisch, it was postponed to December 8.
That day, the rain is pouring and threatens the festival again, then in the evening, as a sign, the sky clears up and the people of Lyon decide to put candlelight by their windows, the whole city is lit up! The religious authorities decided to do the same with the chapel of Fourvière, which then appeared at night. The Festival of Lights was born!
Since then, every 8th December, the Fête des Lumières takes place, Lyon inhabitants have been lighting their windows and then have been walking down the streets to contemplate the many exceptional installations put in place by lighting designers from all over the world. It lasts 4 days. During this period, every evening, from 8pm, take a walk in the centre of Lyon.
